When Speed Isn’t the Same as Confidence

Pressure to move faster is everywhere. Decisions that once took weeks are now expected in days. Forecasts are challenged more often, and with less tolerance for ambiguity. In that environment, speed starts to look like competence.
But speed only helps when the ground underneath it is solid.
While much of the conversation is being pulled toward loosely defined AI initiatives, finance is being asked to carry a different burden. Not experimentation. Not novelty. But confidence — the ability to say what matters, what is stable, and what risk a decision is actually taking.
When that confidence is thin, speed becomes exposure. Decisions are made on simplified views, authority substitutes for clarity, and urgency compresses assumptions that were never fully visible to begin with. The result is movement without conviction.
This is not a theoretical problem. It is playing out in real time. Organisations that resolve it gain more than faster decisions — they gain credibility, influence, and control at the moments it matters most. Those that don’t move just as quickly, but with far less certainty about where they’re heading.
Why Speed Feels Like the Answer
Under pressure, speed is easy to justify.
Markets move faster. Assumptions change more often. Stakeholders expect decisions to keep pace. In that context, hesitation is quickly interpreted as weakness, and decisiveness becomes a proxy for competence.
For finance leaders in particular, speed offers a tempting relief. Faster answers reduce scrutiny, shorten debates, and create the appearance of control. When uncertainty is rising, moving quickly can feel safer than standing still.
This instinct isn’t wrong. It’s incomplete.
Speed solves the symptom of delay, not the cause of discomfort. When confidence is already strong, speed amplifies it. When confidence is thin, speed simply exposes the gaps sooner.
What Speed Actually Does to Decision-Making
Speed doesn’t remove uncertainty. It compresses the space available to manage it.
When decisions must be made quickly, there is less room to surface assumptions, test dependencies, or explore second-order effects. What remains unsaid becomes as important as what is discussed.
In finance, this compression has predictable effects. Blended numbers are favoured over differentiated views. Averages replace ranges. Timing risk is smoothed away to keep momentum. None of this is reckless — it’s efficient. But it quietly shifts decisions away from evidence and toward judgement.
At that point, speed is no longer neutral. It starts to privilege confidence in delivery over confidence in understanding.
The Two Failure Modes Under Pressure
When speed is demanded and confidence is incomplete, organisations tend to fall into one of two patterns.
The first is authority.Decisions are escalated and resolved by a small number of senior leaders. This accelerates action and reduces debate, but it concentrates risk. The organisation moves faster, but learning narrows. If the judgement is wrong, there is little resilience.
The second is simplification.Complex realities are reduced to high-level summaries that travel quickly. Nuance is traded for momentum. The numbers look clean, but the assumptions underneath are no longer visible. Decisions are made efficiently — and sometimes blindly.
Both patterns keep things moving. Neither builds confidence. One relies on people; the other on presentation. In both cases, speed substitutes for clarity.
Why Confidence Can’t Be Rushed
Confidence is not something finance can generate on demand.
It accumulates when decision-makers can see, at the right level, what is stable, what is volatile, and what assumptions a decision depends on. That visibility allows speed to be used selectively — applied where risk is understood and withheld where it isn’t.
Without that foundation, speed becomes indiscriminate. Every decision feels urgent. Every shortcut feels justified. Over time, this erodes finance’s influence. The function becomes reactive rather than directive, present in decisions but not shaping them.
This is where the current moment matters. While attention is drawn toward broad, exploratory initiatives elsewhere, finance’s real opportunity is more fundamental. To raise the quality of decisions under pressure — not by slowing them down, but by ensuring that when they move quickly, they move with intent.
Conclusion — Speed as a Stress Test
Speed is not the opposite of caution. It is a stress test of confidence.
Organisations rarely fail because they move too fast. They fail because they move fast without knowing which assumptions they are relying on, or where the risk truly sits. In those moments, speed amplifies fragility rather than advantage.
For finance leaders, this is not a side issue. It is central to credibility, influence, and relevance. The ability to support faster decisions with genuine confidence is what separates a reporting function from a decision function.
Speed isn’t the same as confidence. But when confidence is real, speed becomes one of finance’s most powerful assets.
